Arden Park News — Knife-Wielding Man Released in Two Hours, Re-Arrested Same Day

WATCH: Lance The PI coverage of the Brian Mattson arrest — Arden area knife incident, Sacramento County.

Brian Mattson — Arden Park Knife Incident Suspect
In the latest Arden Park News, a man carrying a knife was caught on Ring cameras approaching homes and making stabbing motions at front doors in the Arden area — and the criminal justice system let him walk free in less than two hours. The suspect, 56-year-old Brian Mattson, was arrested Saturday morning, released after Sacramento County Probation declined to place a hold, and then arrested again the same day. On Thursday evening, Mattson was seen walking through the neighborhood on La Sierra Drive in the Arden area with a knife in his hand, knocking on doors and attempting to access homes. Multiple residents called 911 after receiving alerts from their Ring cameras. Sacramento County Sheriff’s Lt. Amar Gandhi confirmed deputies responded within minutes. “There were several residents calling, stuff is actually caught on Ring camera. So our deputies got there, got in the area actually just within minutes. But by then he’d fled,” Gandhi said. “It’s pretty scary stuff. He’s going out there literally thrashing on doors with knives. But fortunately, again, nobody hurt.” Rebecca Breen, one of the residents targeted, described the moment she saw Mattson on her doorbell camera. “We heard a loud knock and we looked in the ring camera and we noticed that there was something very strange going on,” Breen said. The footage showed Mattson standing at their door with a knife, appearing to make repeated stabbing motions. “It was terrifying. It was absolutely terrifying,” she said. Breen added that she believes they were a random target. “I think it’s very scary because if it wasn’t us, it’s going to be someone else. Clearly he was not in his right frame of mind at all.” By Saturday morning, deputies tracked down Mattson and placed him under arrest. However, investigators determined the only charge they could file was criminal trespassing — a misdemeanor. Despite Mattson being on active felony probation, Sacramento County Probation declined to place a hold on him. He walked out of Sacramento County Main Jail in less than two hours after being booked. Should Sacramento County Probation be held accountable for this decision? This is one of several recent incidents being tracked across Sacramento Neighborhood News as residents continue to raise concerns about public safety across the region. Hours after his release, North Patrol Deputies responded to a business near Fair Oaks Boulevard and San Lucas Way after Mattson was reported trespassing again. Deputies located him on site and took him into custody without incident. This time a violation of probation hold was approved. Mattson is currently in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office has released Mattson’s photo for public safety awareness and is asking anyone who may have had contact with him, or who may have been a victim of any unreported crimes during this incident, to come forward. Additional victims and information could lead to further charges. This is a developing story.
