A suspect has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting at a liquor store in Arden Arcade after Sacramento County Sheriff’s detectives tracked him down in the Bay Area — and social media may have played a role in his downfall. Xander Burnside, 28, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon in Pinole and booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on a charge of PC 187 felony murder with no bail. The arrest comes days after the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Kenneth Raypaul Peace inside Prestige Wine and Liquor at 1050 Howe Avenue — a case I covered live from the scene.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Prestige Wine and Liquor at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Saturday after reports of a shooting inside the business. Upon arrival, deputies located Peace suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Peace was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a father of two. The suspect had fled the area before deputies arrived. Read our original breaking news coverage of the Howe Avenue homicide here.

According to the store owner — who has operated Prestige Wine and Liquor for 14 years — and a store employee, Peace was standing in line to make a purchase when Burnside entered the store. Peace walked over to Burnside and allegedly threw the first punch. Burnside then pulled out a firearm and shot Peace in the chest. As a former police officer with ten years on the job and a licensed private investigator for over 25 years, I have seen this scenario play out before. A physical altercation can escalate to lethal force in under a second. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is the investigating agency.

Perhaps the most disturbing claim to emerge from this case came from a witness on social media. A Facebook commenter alleges that Burnside jumped on Instagram Live immediately after the shooting and bragged about getting his target — while Howe Avenue was still visible in the background. The witness described Burnside as excitedly explaining what he did, comparing it to a video game. This claim has not been officially confirmed by law enforcement and should be considered unverified at this time. However, if true, it is worth noting that statements made on social media are admissible as evidence and prosecutors routinely use live video and social media posts to establish state of mind in criminal cases.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau identified Burnside as the suspect through surveillance video from inside the store and witness statements. Just three days after the shooting, investigators tracked him 90 miles to Pinole in Contra Costa County and took him into custody without incident on Tuesday afternoon. Burnside was transported back to Sacramento and booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on June 9, 2026. He faces one count of PC 187(A) felony murder and is ineligible for bail. His next court date is scheduled for June 11, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. in Department 61. This is an active Arden Arcade homicide investigation and we will continue to follow this case as it moves through the Sacramento County court system.
